CALL FOR PAPERS

”THAT OTHER SEA – MEMORIES, IDENTITIES, ARCHIPELAGOS”
NOMADIC UNIVERSITY in ZADAR, CROATIA
August 23 – 27, 2010

As part of the XI:th oasis (international conference) of the Nomadic University for Art, Philosophy and Enterprise in Europe – NUrope – we invite papers and presentations from scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, policy makers and others who wish to address one of the topics of the five day conference in late August 2010. NUrope is a philosophical laboratory aiming to explore the links between culture and economy, art and business. Every oasis is strongly contextualized in the particular city where it takes place and framed by an experience-based learning process in combination with inputs from well-informed experts in a variety of fields .

The over-all theme of the conference, That Other Sea: Memories, Identities, Archipelagos, is meant to highlight the relations between the past and contemporariness of a young new-born country and a city which has constantly been destroyed and reconstructed through the ages. Each of the three concepts in the title holds a separate status by itself, but they may also be related in different ways: memory is always a political reality inevitably connected with forgetting and is thus ensconced in the play of memory and forgetting. One of the days during the conference will also focus solely on the challenges associated with the development of cultural tourism in the archipelago of Zadar. However, archipelago may also be considered as a metaphor for the fragmented and plural character of all our configurations of identity, which strongly stresses the question of how to cope with the memories of an impressive and complicated past. What are the conditions for a contribution from art and culture in this current process of identity configuration?

The four first days of this five-day international conference are designed as a joint learning process in order to contextualize ourselves in Zadar and Croatia (including one day organized as a Think Tank). The last day is designated to papers presented in parallel streams

We welcome proposals for papers and presentations on topics that include, but are not limited to, the following themes:

Memory and memory politics.

Cultural heritage and national identities.
